We also used to frequent Asian Pearl, and have been looking for a new go to Chinese place. Found it!
I actually like this place better, and I can't believe it's been here for over 20 years, it's well hidden. The sauces are delicious but not as salty or heavy. I also like that it's a legit restaurant too, not just take out. Looks like there's seating for about 50 people.
We had the Mongolian Beef and Orange Peel Chicken, both were amazing. Egg drop soup had a great broth, again not too salty, just delicious.
Helen, one of the owners, took great care of us. She was super friendly and spent time telling us the restaurant's history. Even though the restaurant was closing in 10 minutes, she made it clear that there was no hurry for us to leave.
I can't wait to go back! -

Hubby was out of town so I was off to fend for myself for dinner. I was craving wonton soup, and my handy dandy Yelp app led me to Shanghai Place.
We had been here once a long time ago, and my husband loved it. I didn't remember much of it, so I thought I'd give it another try. As I was looking through the Yelp photos, the House Special Beef dish caught my eye. After reading the fabulous reviews on this dish, I decided to order that instead of the wonton soup.
I checked the menu photos on Yelp to see what the price is, and discovered that all of the menu photos were several years old. I called in the order and a very sweet lady named Helen answered the call. I asked what the price is for the House Special Beef and she said $11.95, and mentioned that it comes with steamed rice or fried rice. Sounded reasonable to me! She said it would be ready in 20 min.
They are located off of Jeronimo and Los Alisos in an older strip mall area. If you're familiar with Patsy's Irish Pub, they're just a few doors down, next to a Chiropractor. There's also a Shell gas station on the corner. Lots of parking available.
When I arrived, there were only 2 tables occupied. I thought maybe the rain was keeping people away. My food was ready and sitting on the counter. Helen came out to greet me, and she was as sweet in person as she was on the phone.
First bite into the House Special Beef dish, and I knew I had ordered a winner! It's hard to describe the sauce on it. It's not sweet, sour or spicy, however you definitely need a carb like rice or chow mein to go with it. It was delicious! The meat was thin but very tender. The steamed rice actually tasted kind of dry and stale. Next time I may order chow mein or another side dish to go with it.
The portion didn't look that big in the take-out box, but by the time I was finished eating, I had only made half a dent in it. That means I get to have yummy leftovers!
The meal came with a fortune cookie, and my fortune was spot on! I look forward to returning and trying some of their other dishes. -

Thanks for YELP, found this great Mandarin & Szechuan restaurant. Family run business for 21 years (think there were 3 generations of family). Very friendly as soon as we walked in the door. They have a loose menu that offers entree (we had Cashew Chicken) choice of 2 different soups, steamed or fried rice, wonton, vegetable egg roll, foil wrapped chicken, fortune cookie & yummy almond cookie. Hot tea is made with loose tea. All for only $13.95. Everything came out nice & hot, crispy vegetables. Will definitely be back. Thank you for the great food & service.

Ok. Super hole in the wall. If you want to feel loved and appreciated go here.. the ladies who work here (maybe the owners?) are soo sweet and joyful. I picked this spot randomly since it was on our way back to San Diego.. one of the ladies answered and said she would save me a booth by the window.. we arrive .. 30 min later.. I didn't say a word and she remembered my voice.
Anyhow the wonton soup was hearty but could have used more flavor. The egg foo young house special and beef and broccoli with added shrimp was delicious and tasty!
Lots of local and long time customers were eating dinner there (Sunday night).
I like the positive vibes and would love to support restaurants like these.
